November 11, 2010 is Veterans Day On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice (a temporay cessation of hostilities) was signed between the Allied Forces and Germany, ending 'the war to end all wars', World War I. Seven months later, on June 28th 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed. In November of 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commeration of Armistice Day, later to become a legal holiday on May 13th, 1938.  Finally, on June 1, 1954,...

June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more...

Tuesday is primary day here in PA. Please try to make it to the polls. Also, consider those issues that are near and dear to our hearts as Catholics and cast your vote for the person that will actively uphold those same values. The League of Women Voters of the Lehigh Valley publishes a great guide to each of the elections. You can view it by clicking here.

On Capital Hill, our politicians are feverishly working towards hammering out a bill to overhaul the nation's health care system. We have to emphasize that as Catholics, we can not support a bill that has any provision that promotes or subsidizes elective abortions. Please use the links above to the left and call your local representative. Be polite, but be firm in explaining that you oppose a final bill which includes such provisions. Emails are great, but phone calls do seem to make more of an impact. This...

My inbox has been getting crowded with emails regarding the health care bill. Of particular discussion at present has been its connection to abortion funding through subsidies and other shell games played with our tax dollars.

The Catholic Church is perfectly clear on this matter. Click here to read Cardinal Rigali's comments regarding Catholic members of congress and their support of health care reform.

There are some members that have stood up for pro-life principles. Click on this link to...

Up above, we posted a summary of the origin of Veterans Day. But we'd be remiss if we didn't specifically thank those in our council that served. To all our veterans, your service and sacrifice are appreciated more than we can ever express. We are grateful to have you in our council and humbled to call you "Brother Knights".

Proposition 8, a CA  voter approved state constitutional amendment that protected the definition of marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman, had been challenged in CA Supreme court by pro-same-sex marriage groups. They had alleged that it violated equal protection and sought to overturn the measure, despite the majority voter approval. The CA Supreme Court today has upheld the validity of Proposition 8. For more information, please click here.

Here's a brief history of the Memorial Day holiday, that I found quite interesting:

After the bloody war between the States, citizens of the North and the South felt a need to honor those fallen in the war. On various days people from different communities would place flowers at the graves of those they wished to honor. The day came to be known as Decoration Day. By 1868, the northern states were keeping the day on May 30.

In 1882, the day was renamed Memorial Day and extended to honor the fallen...

Here we are on the leading edge of Memorial Day Weekend. Most folks view this time as a day off from work, the opening of pools, and the unofficial start of the summer season.  However, there is a very important aspect to this holiday that we seldom take the time to think about. It is a day, set aside in our country, to remember those in our military that died in service to others. Please remember in prayer and deed, all of our brave men and women that have fallen, for our sake, due to the perils of war.

This comes from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

You may have heard that the US Department of Health and Human Services is inviting public comment on a proposal to rescind a federal regulation. This regulation essentially protects the conscience rights of health care providers, especially those at risk of descrimination because of their moral or religious objections to abortion.

This means that without this protection, a doctor or other health care provider can be fired for refusing to...

You're probably all aware of Prop * in California - the recent ballot initiative in that state to formally define in their constitution that marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman. As a sidenote, it was approved by a majority of the CA voting public and yet is still being challenged.  Here's an interesting piece on the legislation by William Duncan of the Marriage Law Foundation as published in National Review Online.  It's rather chilling to see how the will of the people in a clear mandate is not being...

This is from an email that must have been circulating a while. It's a piece from ABC News back in Feb 2007 called "Person of the Week". They spotlighted Bert Brady, who tells a heartwarming story of support of our troops. You can read the interview here and watch the video from YouTube here. While the story is a little on the old side, the message is valuable. One person and one kind act can make the difference to a whole bunch of people. Enjoy.

Are you prepared for the headlines Nov. 5?

“Abortion Issue Irrelevant”  “Values Voters Stay Home” “Culture War Lost”

We can’t let this happen. Less than two weeks from today, Americans will go to the polls to vote in perhaps the most important election of our lifetime. So much is at stake. We simply cannot afford to sit on the sidelines at this 11th hour.

Visit www.catholicvote.com and see how you can help get out the message of how important...

Here's a link to a fantastic video regarding what is at stake this election cycle and how amazingly important the Catholic vote is.  Watch it by clicking here. Share it because it's not just about the Knights or just about men, but all Catholics. See what I mean.

Voting is still one of the last things that is tax-free. It is everyone's right and is your best way to help shape the way you want to be governed. However, to vote in the November 4th election this year, you must be registered by October 6th. In addition, if you won't be able to go to your polling place to cast your ballot, you can vote using an absentee ballot. The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is October 28th. Here is some important information about registration and absentee balloting from Rep....
