Supreme Council Sends Aid for Flood Victims in Philippines
In response to the devastating flash floods that swept across a southern portion of the Philippines shortly before Christmas, the Supreme Council has sent $30,000 in emergency relief funds to assist with the humanitarian efforts in the Mindanao jurisdiction. 500-Year-Old Monument at St. Peter’s Basilica rededicated
The funerary monument of Pope Innocent VIII (Giovanni Battista Cybo, 1484-1492) in St. Peter’s Basilica was rededicated on Dec. 5 following a restoration undertaken with the support of the of Knights of Columbus.


Vatican Secretary of State Thanks Knights of Columbus for Work in Rome
Speaking at a concert celebrating the groundbreaking for the new "Largo Cavalieri di Colombo" in Rome, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone thanked the Knights for the more than 90 years of service the organization has given to the City of Rome and the Vatican. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and Rome’s Mayor Giovanni Alemanno were among the attendees.

Second Responders
On Nov. 18, Capt. Alfredo Fuentes, FDNY (Ret.) addressed the state deputies about the Order’s new Second Responders Program, which was announced at the Supreme Convention held in Denver last August. As consultant to the supreme knight for disaster relief, Fuentes is developing the program that will help K of C councils to effectively support their communities when faced with a disaster, whether natural or manmade.


State Deputies Gather for Midyear Meeting
Representing the Order’s 72 jurisdictions, K of C state deputies arrived Thursday, Nov. 17, in Nashville, Tenn., for their midyear meeting. Just as the state deputies’ meeting in June invited the participation of state secretaries, emphasizing teamwork and collaboration at the state council level, the Nov. 17-20 meeting overlapped with a meeting of state chaplains, emphasizing the importance of spiritual development of K of C members.


K of C Chaplains Gather for Midyear Meeting in Nashville
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, state chaplains from more than 50 jurisdictions of the Knights of Columbus arrived in Nashville, Tenn., for several days of meetings discussing the spiritual formation of the Order’s members. The first meeting of its kind took place last March in New Haven, Conn., putting renewed emphasis on the role of the chaplain in the Knights.


New Initiative Helps African AIDS Orphans
The Knights of Columbus recently announced a new outreach program that will provide care and shelter for the millions of children in Africa who are orphaned because of AIDS.

Earlier this year, the United States marked the 150th anniversary of the start of the U.S. Civil War. A gruesome conflict that lasted from 1861-65 and claimed the lives of approximately 620,000 Americans, the Civil War saw by its conclusion both the abolition of slavery and the untimely death of President Abraham Lincoln.


Knights Defend 10th Infantry Division´s WWII Memorial
Knights from Montana are defending a memorial statue built by veterans of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division as a tribute to their, and their comrades’, service and sacrifice during World War II. The memorial, a statue of Christ located on top of Big Mountain in Whitefish, Mont. is being threatened with eviction because of its religious symbolism.

A fully-equipped prosthetics and rehabilitation clinic established with funds provided by the Knights of Columbus is being dedicated today to the memory of Emilio Moure, the former Supreme Secretary of the Knights who died of cancer in July 2011.


Supreme Knight Addresses Divine Mercy Conference in Poland
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, joined Cardinal Angelo Comastri, Vicar General for the Vatican City State, and Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the Archbishop of Krakow and former secretary to Blessed John Paul II, at the Second World Apostolic Conference on Divine Mercy held in Krakow, Poland. As part of the conference, on Oct. 4, Supreme Knight Anderson delivered a speech titled “The Pope of Mercy: The Role of Blessed John Paul II in the Lives of the Laity,” in the late pontiff's home town of Wadowice. Among those present the supreme knight’s speech were Cardinal Comastri; Archbishop Szymon, Eastern Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Łódź and Poznań; and Bishop Tadeusz Szurman of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland.

Stalwart Partners
Of the many causes and charities of the Knights of Columbus, Special Olympics is one that is highly valued by individual members and garners a great amount of support. Since the first games were created in 1968 by fellow Knight Sargent Shriver and his wife Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Knights of Columbus members have been active and devoted supporters of Special Olympics.


Knights Announce Second Responders Program
One month before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Supreme Council introduced a new initiative called the Knights of Columbus Second Responders that will provide support to the victims of natural or manmade disasters.


9/11 First Responder and Survivor Capt. Al Fuentes to Head K of C Disaster Response Program
At its 129th annual convention in Denver last month, the Knights of Columbus announced the launch of a new project headed by 9/11 first responder and survivor Capt. Alfredo Fuentes, a New York City Fire Captain who coordinated the rescue of survivors including other emergency services personnel and was seriously injured when the North Tower collapsed, burying him in rubble.

Knights Join Thousands in Welcoming Pope to World Youth Day
On Thursday, Aug. 18, hundreds of thousands of World Youth Day pilgrims made their way toward the Plaza de Cibeles to welcome Pope Benedict XVI to Madrid. Excitement filled the air and music filled the streets as volunteers and police directed the growing crowd.

Supreme Knight's Statement on S&P Action
The action taken by Standard and Poor's on Monday, August 8, does not reflect in any way on the business operations or performance of the Knights of Columbus. S&P’s action – as their statement indicates – was caused by the downgrade of the rating of the United States in response to this country’s debt crisis.


New Supreme Secretary, Supreme Treasurer and Asst. Supreme Advocate Appointed
The Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus appointed Charles E. Maurer Jr., who has served as supreme treasurer since September 2010, as supreme secretary, filling the vacant position left by the late Emilio B. Moure. The Board also appointed Supreme Director Logan T. Ludwig as supreme treasurer.

During the Mass on Thursday morning offered in memory of all deceased Knights of Columbus, Supreme Chaplain Bishop William E. Lori said that the prayers of the faithful can assist those who have gone before us in their journey toward heaven “where they will see the triune God face to face.”

Four new members were added to the Order’s Board of Directors with the title of supreme director. Newly elected were Past State Deputies Arthur J. Harris of New York, Brian W. Simer of Idaho, James R. Scroggin of California and Meclea L. Casavant of Alberta, Canada, who also is a former supreme warden.

New Our Lady of Guadalupe Program Opens
A new Knights of Columbus Marian Prayer Program dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe was launched Aug. 3 at the Supreme Convention in Denver. The prayer program will continue through next year, when the second international Guadalupe Festival will be held in the Los Angeles Coliseum a few days before the opening of the 2012 convention.


Week of Pilgrimage, Week of Service
For a group of college Knights of Columbus, World Youth Day in Madrid will be an experience of service and growth. They will be serving as volunteers at “Love and Life: A Home for English-speaking Pilgrims” sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Sisters of Life.


Clinic to Be Named for Emilio B. Moure
The clinic in Haiti sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, which provides prosthetic devices for children who lost a limb in the earthquake last year, will be newly named after Former Supreme Secretary Emilio B. Moure, who passed away last month after a long battle with cancer.


Mass with Eleven Cardinals Opens Convention
With more than 2,500 delegates and their families attending, the Opening Mass for the 129th Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention was concelebrated by some 100 priests and more than 70 archbishops and bishops, including 11 cardinals.

New Life for Haitian Amputee Players

Emilio Moure Memorial

The Knights of Columbus mourns the loss of Supreme Secretary Emilio B. Moure, who passed away at his Connecticut home on July 23 after a battle with cancer. He was 54 years old and had served as Supreme Secretary of the Knights of Columbus until his death.

The United States Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance, thus ending a seven year battle involving two separate cases, one originating in California and the other in New Hampshire.

The Knights of Columbus is releasing four professionally produced advertisements that highlight the history, charity and life-changing impact of the Order and invite Catholic men to join and “make a difference.” The four ads were introduced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and shown to state deputies, state secretaries and their wives at the closing session of the organizational meeting on Sunday.

New State Deputies Receive Jewels and Mission
During a Mass celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, the birthplace of the Order, newly elected state deputies from 40 jurisdictions received the jewels of their office from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Knights of Columbus from throughout Mexico traveled to the Shrine of Christ the King at the top of Cerro del Cubilete (Cubilete Hill) March 27 for a special day of worship in memory of the K of C martyrs who were killed during the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico in the 1920s.

In response to the horrific recent destruction from the major earthquake and the resulting tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, the Supreme Council is working with the Knights of Columbus military councils in that country to determine key projects on which the Order can offer financial assistance.

Another great year of insurance growth and service
A tenth consecutive year of growth is a terrific topic for a column. 2010 was such a year for the Knights of Columbus Insurance program, which grew in every category. This is a pretty remarkable feat, especially considering the economic conditions of this past decade. Let me share a few of the Order’s accomplishments with you.
